About Yoga Therapeutics

What led you to therapeutic yoga?

After much study and training, I took vows to dispense  yoga with

kind-hearted compassion to others. Then my teacher trained me in the art and science of yoga. Then he taught me yoga as a spinal / orthopedic medicine for students’ structural and soft tissue injuries. Then he taught me yoga as a systemic medicine and neuro-science that remits disease and mental perturbations. He instilled the obligation to “give back” to others what he gave me so they too would avoid bad outcomes.

About Yoga for BackCare

What’s the history of Yoga for Back Care?

After a 2-year training, ‘72-’74 developed by B.K.S. Iyengar Guruji, I studied with him in America and India, ‘75/’76.  He initiated me into the classical tradition of yoga.

As a dancer at USF ’79, I suffered a crippling spinal injury from a fall.  MDs told me I’d never dance or do yoga ever again, have a permanent limp and pain if lucky, but likely because of the three-directional collapse of my spine I would spend my life disabled in a wheelchair, possibly paraplegic with/without spinal fusion.

I remembered my teacher helping his ‘lost cause’ patients in India and their immense gratitude for the relief he gave them. Realizing I too was a lost cause I escaped St Mary’s Hospital/San Francisco hours before surgery and called him; he took me as his patient in India.

In 6 months he healed my back via a gazillion steps. By his request I brought Yoga for Back Care to America, ’80. Doing as he instructed, MD’s named it the #1 program for backs / SF Bay Area above medical/alternative programs, which research has proven.

About Iyengar Prescriptions

If yoga is a medicine for chronic ailments, why is it not more widely touted?

Science is made up of reproducible proofs that last the tests of time. Yoga is such a natural science and medicine, the most tested, the most tried and true.

2,500 years ago, Patanjali, author of the Yoga Sutras, published a medical text of remedies - the Carakapratisamskrtah. Iyengar elevated this medicine to a scale not known before and trained a few of us closely to impart these methods.

People intuitively seek the practical methods Iyengar gave us, which end pain, feel good resolve chronic problems and lead them to wellness, self-reliance and living life happily.

Patients get free from office visits, pills and procedures. They get better and stay better.

In the 20th and 21st century, research boasts therapeutic IY for cardio-pulmonary, immune, spinal / orthopedic, reproductive and  stress disorders. Science associates it with ‘healing the body, remodeling tissues and restoring postural integrity and systemic function.

About Private Consults

How do I start a private program?

By email, phone or text, (415.626.8441

evlaleah@mac.comafter deciding to participate in a therapeutic program: provide the history of your injury or ailment from onset to present time and answer these questions in detail:

  1. What events or symptoms happened at onset of pain and / or limitations?

  2. What diagnosed or self assessed injury, postural habit or congenital anomaly is causing your problem?

  3. What symptom(s) occurred at onset and in the time since?

  4. How have your symptoms / limitations changed overtime?

  5. What treatments helped or hindered your improvement?

  6. What is your exposure to yoga?

  7. Level of fitness?

How do you determine what I need?

During a Diagnostic Consult (DC), for patients with moderate to severe pain, I evaluate range of motion (ROM), anatomic, bio-mechanical and functional health deficits, compressive, inflammatory and other stress factors at the root of their issue and the prognosis that is likely without intervention.

Throughout a DC and afterwards, I share my observations in detail of the aforementioned as well as clinical research relevant to a student’s issue and what treatment is warranted.

Bring a notebook. Review the pain / symptom scale at top of this page.

After a DC, I often write a lengthy Diagnostic Summary (DS) for clinical and other publications and teacher trainings. If a patient participates in therapy the essay will grow to cover a patient’s treatment protocols so others with the same/similar issues benefit. In that case a draft may be shared with the patient.

No form of a DS is covered by the DC or yogamedica program fees a student pays.

What will I do in a private consult program?

I develop a systematic pose series that is particular to a patient’s issue and crucial for improving functional, postural, musculo-skeletal and bio-mechanical attributes, restoring tissue health and relieving symptoms.

Pose series involve use of props, which enable students to learn the right actions in poses.

The shapes the body takes during a therapeutic practice normalizes tissue and joint relationships and regenerate good health. Some poses involve strong effort; some are relaxing. Relaxation at the end of a session allows for assimilation of physical changes.

As students learn how to do poses in exacting ways, they establish agile-strength, increase mobility and improves postural integrity. By compounded benefit they disentangle and mend scar tissue and avoid future degeneration.

Eventually, students exceed the need for prescriptive poses and join the Spine Clinics and/or the regular classes.

Students often start consults in bad shape but, right away begin to lift physical restrictions at root levels and start feeling better. Consults are enriching, transformative and liberating.

About Private Programs

What precautions should I put in place while doing a private program?

Yoga rehab is intensive. Reduce your obligations and take extra care of yourself to assimilate what you learn.

If you cannot ask loved ones to take over some things at least take extra rest - afternoon naps.

Do the home practice you are given.

Keep a log of what you learn and questions as they arise.  Writing perks the memory. I provide some photos gratis of your prescriptive practice now and then that can be attached to notes.

About Fitness

Do I need to be fit or experienced?

Not at all. You’ll develop fitness during treatment at a pace that’s suitable for you.  You will be taught how to move into, hold and exit poses safely to build yourself up again.

Inevitably, you will gain dynamic strength, pliability and endurance along with statuesque posture.  You will feel great!

About RX Coverage

Will insurance cover  medical yoga?

Maybe. Ask your MD to submit an RX to your insurance Co. for reimbursement of your fees.

  About Apparel & Props

What props do I need?

2/round asana bolsters, 1-2/prana pillows, 2/Pune belts, 2/sticky mats, 3/wooden or cork blocks, 1/crate, 2/yoga chairs, 6 blankets (roll blankets can simulate bolsters).

What should I wear for yoga?

Nothing too loose and baggy, or too tight and restrictive. Street pants with zippers, buckles or belts don’t work well.  Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to bend in a variety of directions  and which allows me to see how your body moves and its alignment in poses.
